Founded in 1922, Kellner & Kunz is a leading provider of tools, fastening systems, and C-parts, which are essential low-cost components like screws, nuts, and connecting components. They supply products to craftspersons, manufacturing companies, and the automotive sector.

After experiencing higher-than-expected growth, they sought to expand their headquarters in Wels, Austria. Their goal was to increase throughput, cut down on delivery times, boost productivity, and reduce errors by more than 50%. They turned to TGW Logistics for innovative warehouse automation solutions.

How TGW Logistics Introduced Warehouse Automation to an Existing System

To expand the Kellner & Kunz distribution center without disrupting ongoing operations, we had to retrofit the facility with innovative fulfillment solutions.

Smart Receiving and Automated Storage

Goods delivered on pallets or in cartons are prepped for storage at ergonomically designed workstations.

A fully automated storage system includes tote, pallet, and tray locations. Employees replenish products from the high-bay warehouse at dedicated workstations.

Faster Product Picking and Packing

Optimal goods-to-person picking was achieved with 20 workstations, allowing fast-moving products to be pulled quickly and efficiently. Two Mustang storage and retrieval machines (ASRS) support material flow optimization, and the picking area includes 1,900 positions for totes and 2,800 storage positions in the flow channel. With 16 packing workstations, operators can pack 700 boxes and prepare 45 pallets for shipment per hour.

An Energy-Efficient Shuttle System

The center’s automated mini-load warehouse is equipped with 15 Mustang E storage and retrieval machines. The addition of a sustainably designed, energy-recuperating shuttle system makes storing and retrieving goods fast and error-free. This implementation also includes six high-performance picking workstations.
