Coop’s Automated Grocery Logistics Guarantee a Fresh Product

Zurich, Switzerland

Fresh goods on a daily basis

Coop, one of Switzerland’s largest retail and wholesale grocery companies, supplies approximately 360 shops in the Northwest, Central, and Zurich sales regions. They process daily shop orders for milk, confectionary products, meat, and fish at 36°F using warehouse automation solutions from TGW Logistics.

Our Objectives

Shorten lead times: The quality of fresh goods is crucial to cold chain logistics. By shortening lead times and implementing careful handling, Coop ensures that orders will get to the shops fast, reliably, and safe.

Shop-specific picking: An automated packing pattern generator organizes orders by store-specific layouts, enabling rapid, efficient in-store replenishment and streamlined supply chain operations.

Innovative Warehouse Software

The brain of Coop’s order fulfillment is the TGW Logistics warehouse management software, which ensures all processes run smoothly. It calculates the ideal stacking pattern of refrigerated goods while considering optimal filling levels, height stability, and short travel distances in supermarkets.

Automated Goods Receipt and Storage

Coop’s products are delivered in standardized plastic crates on roll containers. Once received, the stacked crates are automatically separated from roll containers and loaded onto trays. The trays are loaded with several units, depending on size. The trays are then stored in an automated shuttle system consisting of 60,000 locations.

Highly Efficient Picking and Shipping

Automated picking reduces the workload on employees in the refrigerated environment and provides for gentle material handling of sensitive goods. As a highly dynamic picking buffer, the shuttle warehouse has the necessary stock for approximately two days. Plastic crates required for shop orders are automatically retrieved from stock and transported to stackers. The stacks are loaded onto roll containers, secured and labeled for shipping, and transported via our KingDrive conveyor system to the goods issue buffer.
