Grocery Logistics

How Automated Picking Quadrupled Frisco’s Order Capacity

Warsaw, Poland

Done-For-You Automated Solutions

On-time home delivery of grocery items is of the utmost importance. Produce, in particular, has a finite shelf life that requires the product to be disposed of after the expiration date. Our ability to build and service state-of-the-art, efficient, automated solutions is why Frisco began working with us. We implemented automation for a high-capacity fulfillment center spanning 11,000 m2 with four distinct temperature zones - quadrupling Frisco’s order processing capacity. In addition, the decreased lead time has reduced food waste and made it possible for Frisco to offer customers same-day delivery of fresh groceries.

About Frisco

Located eight miles northwest of Warsaw, Frisco is one of Poland's leading online grocery retailers. The company, which is part of the Eurocash Group, focuses on service quality and fast delivery. Because they have upgraded their cold chain logistics, they are able to deliver to customers in and around Warsaw seven days a week using their fleet of vehicles and special pickup stations.

Challenges Mastered

  • High Efficiency: Frisco’s order picking is now more cost-efficient with lower labor costs for better profitability
  • Fast Delivery and Less Food Waste: Automation made it possible to fulfill up to four times as many orders per day and reduce food waste through decreased order lead times
  • Discrete Temperature Zones for Efficient Logistics: Four zones accommodate room temperature goods, produce, refrigerated products, and freezer products

Future Supply Chain Strategy

Frisco began working with us because they had reached their fulfillment capacity. One of our objectives was to increase order throughput immediately while allowing growth far into the future. Our solution was perfect for their needs because of its scalability and flexibility. When more capacity is needed, Frisco can expand the facility seamlessly. The facility requires minimal human involvement in the fulfillment process, drastically decreasing the error rate and labor turnover costs. Increased efficiency allows for faster delivery of orders to customers while maintaining product quality and reducing waste.

Automated Cold Chain Logistics from Receivables to Deliverables

Goods Receipt and Storage

In the goods receiving area, the goods are delivered on pallets and repackaged in totes at ergonomic workstations. The goods are separated into dry and refrigerated goods, and totes are transported via the shuttle systems to the warehouse. The shuttle warehouse boasts 36,000 storage locations, and more than 4,000 items per hour can be stored and retrieved.

Picking

Order picking takes place at 12 ergonomic workstations. The required goods are removed from the shuttle warehouse and conveyed in sequence to the TGW Logistics PickCenter workstations, where they are picked in order totes. The workstations are height adjustable to accommodate people of differing stature. Computer monitors at each station display picking information in a way that minimizes human error.

Packing and Shipping

All finished totes are loaded into roll containers using a TGW Logistics palletizing robot and made available for shipping. Finally, the goods are delivered to the customers in Frisco’s special delivery vehicles.

TGW Logistics Software

The TGW Warehouse Management Software WERX is the force behind Frisco’s automated system—allowing logistics for ecommerce to be fully customized based on the required workflow. Our robust system ensures all goods are picked in the distribution center efficiently and on time while meeting all packaging and delivery requirements.
