Seizing opportunities and giving back

Interview with System Engineer René Bachinger about uniting technology and creativity in his job at TGW.

Name / job / TGW location:
René Bachinger / Systems Engineer / Wels, Austria

My latest online order:
An Alexa - now and then I order things from Amazon

At TGW since:
September 2011

The most important piece of equipment for my job:
Definitely my laptop and a large monitor, without them my work wouldn't be possible

My duties summarised in a book title:
The Engineer Job

Your department as a flag: What does it look like?
I picture our department as a pit crew in motor sports, keeping the processes running smoothly requires every single person and their skills

Early bird or night owl?
Usually a night owl

Thinking outside the box is routine for René Bachinger. His and his colleagues' tasks within a customer project are complex, as are the required expert knowledge and interfaces to the specialist fields involved. His connection to this environment? The passion for technology, automation and motivation.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB

We develop and carry out electrical controls solutions for our customers' systems, and we are also involved during their implementation on-site. That covers everything from wiring during control cabinet construction to hooking up individual components. Thus, during both the concept and implementation phase, we represent an important link for our colleagues, especially those in Sales and Mechanics.

WHAT ARE SOME TYPICAL "CHALLENGES" THAT YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME IN YOUR JOB?

As with all engineering disciplines, it's all about getting from the abstract to the concrete, from the general to the detailed. What ultimately matters is the optimal performance of the customer's system, and that can only be achieved when all the departments involved are in intense and constant communication. The layout discussions in particular involve every subarea, and that requires a good balance of technical understanding and specialist knowledge as well as communication skills and financial sense.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT AND STILL ARE IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR JOB?

I've always had a soft spot for everything technical, as well as a good helping of creativity. That has become noticeable in my current area of responsibility and often makes complex processes easier. On top of that, I'm quite an inquisitive and curious person and I constantly need something new to stay motivated.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DEVELOPMENT AT TGW SO FAR

I started at TGW with a mechatronics engineering apprenticeship, and over time I was already gaining practical experience at customer sites. That was an excellent foundation for my next steps, and since I was also becoming more and more interested in automation, I began as a Junior Systems Engineer after successfully completing my apprenticeship. About three years ago I also got the chance to participate in apprentice training, which I really enjoy doing. As a former apprentice myself, I know all too well what will come in usefully to our up-and-coming experts. I think the most important expertise I can pass along to them is a sound basis of in-house knowledge, so that the apprentices can, for example, pitch in during on-site installation.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO AFTER WORK?

Even outside of work it's mostly all about engineering for me, just more focused on sports cars and tuning. It's a passion my friends and I share. I also like to tinker, for example, I make lamps out of wood. Apart from that, I'm interested in travelling and foreign cultures. The U.S., Cuba and Thailand are some of the destinations I'd like to visit next.
